Most schools in Hong Kong have more than 20 years of history, and their facilities clearly show signs of ageing. Research highlights that nearly 70 percent of schools lack sufficient special rooms such as STEM labs, music studios, or art classrooms. Some campuses operate without safe playgrounds or usable libraries, while others struggle with leaking ceilings and poor maintenance. These outdated environments are uninspiring for students and challenging for teachers.

Because resources are scarce, schools often prioritize spending on student-facing upgrades—digital tools, classrooms, or lab equipment. This means the Teacher Workplace is left behind. Staff lounges, meeting areas, and preparation rooms often remain cramped, uncomfortable, and overlooked. Teachers, who already work more than 51 hours per week on average, with half exceeding 61 hours, are forced to plan lessons, grade assignments, and collaborate in uninspiring settings.

The combined effect of old facilities and high stress leaves educators unsupported and demoralized. Surveys show teacher happiness at its lowest level in a decade, with over 90 percent reporting high stress. Without better workplaces and recognition, schools risk losing talented staff and compromising overall teaching standards.

To close this gap, EcoSage has developed a programme that turns surplus office furniture into impactful resources for schools. What began as a sustainability initiative has grown into a purpose-driven program dedicated to improving Teacher Workplaces while reducing waste.

Every item goes through strict assessment to ensure safety, cleanliness, and functionality. IT devices are securely wiped to international standards. Furniture that cannot be reused is responsibly recycled. This ensures that every donation improves teaching environments while promoting circularity.

In 2025, with the support of the Share Love Charity Fund, EcoSage expanded its network of beneficiaries to include more than 30 schools across Hong Kong as well as NGOs serving youth, families, and community development. Since 2023, nearly 4,000 pieces of furniture from desks and chairs to cabinets and sofas have been donated, transforming classrooms, staff rooms, and teacher lounges.
